Ah, bad breath. No one wants it yet most of us suffer from it at some point in time. Unfortunately, there is no one magical, permanent cure for bad breath. Sure, you could pop in a mint, but that’s only a short-term solution.

Don’t give up hope just yet! There are some lifestyle changes you can make that will lessen your bad breath and help you get back to your old sweet-smelling self. Here are a few:

Drink Water

A dry mouth is a breeding-ground for bacteria, which can in turn cause cavities. The more water you drink, the cleaner your mouth will be. It’s also a great idea to rinse after meals if you’re unable to brush your teeth right away.

Scrape Your Tongue

Every time you brush your teeth, take a few seconds to scrape your tongue. Tongue scraping cleans your tongue of old and smelly bacteria. You can scrape your tongue with a special tongue scraper, or just with your toothbrush. Make sure to rinse your toothbrush afterward.

Mouthwash

Try a few, pick a favorite, and use it religiously. The more you like it, the more you’ll want to use it. Ideally this should be the last thing you do before bed.

Eat Healthy

Consume healthy fruits and vegetables that involve a lot of chewing. The more saliva you produce in your mouth, the faster it can rinse away bad-smelling particles and bacteria.

Quit Smoking

Smoking fills your mouth with toxic particles that can remain for long amounts of time. The best way to combat this is to stop smoking, period. Of course, that’s a lot harder than it sounds, so if you’re a smoker do you best to cut down on the amount of cigarettes you have in a day.

No one wants bad breath. It can impact our work and our relationships. There’s no doubt about it— bad breath is a tough problem to solve. But there is hope. If you’re suffering from bad breath, contact our office today to discuss your options with a dental professional.
